Way Back When – Portrait of the Howell Family

John Henry Howell and Amanda Emily Ringo were the paternal great-granduncle and grandaunt of Philip Ray Howell (1948-2020), the home person in the Howell-Richards family tree. Their relationship is shown in a chart at the end of this post.

  Ringo Howell] wrote of her grand-

  parents: 

 

        Grandfather [John Henry Howell] was killed

       when his bicycle was struck by an automo-

       bile when he was riding it, without lights, on 

       what is now Main Street in Gas city (near 

       the bowling alley, now). At the time, the 

       place was called Bimm's Farm. Grand-

       mother [Amanda Emily Ringo] continued to 

       live in their little "farm" in Slabtown, just 

       down the road from  Sam Troxell's place 

       near Candy Bridge until she was unable to 

       take her regular walks to town where she 

       purchased her groceries then pushed 

       them home in a baby carriage. She moved 

       to Fairmount where she made her home

       until 1935 when she died.

 

        and

      I have a picture of my grandparents and 

      their children in front of a log cabin. I think 

      the occasion was the wedding of their 

      eldest daughter whom we always called 

      Aunt Lizzie. They had ten children. 

 

The log cabin photo was published in the Marion, Indiana Chronicle Tribune Magazine on February 19, 1984. Elizabeth's wedding took place on May 24, 1903. She is third from the left in the back; her husband, Edward [Frank] Johnson, is next to her.
